Introduction

Critics writing about Siskind’s work during the past 40 years have often used ‘confrontational’ to describe Siskind images.  The over-all theme is the human condition in all its emotionality.  Siskind looks beneath the masks we wear, directly at grief, loss, personal memory; the figure always in the Midwestern landscape.  Three bodies of work in the 2000’s, Kindred Spirits, Lipstick and A Cup in Time, present metaphors in a lighter  more immediate and humorous vein.  The painting “The Way the Wind Blows” was first exhibited at Ruschman Gallery in the show Kindred Spirits; recent venues include the Indianapolis Art Center.
